Eve Ozer entered this world in a rebellious state of mind.
She was born in 1951 in Wiesbaden, Germany. When she was four, her mother married an American soldier and they immigrated to the United States when she was nine.
Scraps of paper and pencils were her first tools. Through independent study and workshops Eve found her niche in mixed media painting. Her pencil case now includes charcoal, graphite, ink, acrylic, oil, cold wax, sand, marble dust, molding paste, joint compound and other non-traditional tools.
After 37 years in the corporate world, Eve now devotes her days in her studio in the Chicago area.
I attempt to create spiritual spaces of mystery and wonder and yet, am compelled to add the energy of high key color, creating surprise and tension in the work. A nod to the humor of my imperfection and a reminder not to take myself too seriously.
Many people say they don't understand abstraction. I suggest looking at the work through a different lens, the lens of color, shape and form, instead of the lens of realism. Not knowing why you like something occupies a divine space. A space where the unknown becomes known in a language spoken from the heart, instead of the mind.
Building layers is an essential part of my process; with each layer I remind myself I am not making a painting, I'm telling a story told in paper and paint, and like all good stories, lots of editing.
It's successful when I can make a connection with the audience. Unlike storytelling, abstract painting is a two-way conversation. The audience finishes the painting by bringing their own story to it; that's the full circle connection.
I want the joy I feel when I'm painting to be felt, and perhaps, those feelings get carried away by the viewer, making their lives better as well.
